New features andimprovements 2026.01
7
• External forcings file: nearly all quantities from the old-style external forcing file format
(extForceFile) are now supported in the new formats (extForceFileNew and iniFieldFile).
You can convert your model input by importing and exporting the model in the Delta Shell GUI or by
using the Python conversion tool (break out session yesterday).
• Containers: Created a container knowledge base:
https://publicwiki.deltares.nl/spaces/Delft3DContainers/pages/256475160/Delft3D+Containers+Home
Within this wiki, you’ll find everything you need to install, run, and integrate our containers.
• Single repository for Delft3D FM GUI development

Improvements 2026.01 –kernel
9
• Compiler update: We have transitioned from the Intel Fortran IFORT compiler to the Intel Fortran
IFX compiler. If you compile the code yourself, please update your environment to use the new
compiler.
• Adjusting the location of partitioned output files on Linux: On a Linux machine, the partitioned
network file can be stored in the same directory as the MDU file.
• Output in single precision and/or with compression: Although this functionality has been
available for some time, it is worth highlighting that output files can be written in single precision
(using the MDU-keywords NcHisDataPrecision and NcMapDataPrecision) and/or with compression
(NcCompression), which can significantly reduce file sizes.

Improvements 2026.01 –D-Flow FM
10
New features
• Thermobaricity
− Take the effect of pressure on the water density into account
• Time- and spatially varying air density
• Faster initialization as more data is stored in the .cache files
• New quantity: netsolarradiation and new MDU-keyword Albedo
• Salinity dependent freezing point
− Allows for negative water temperature in saline waters
• Additional options for turbulence modelling
• Improved/adjusted default values (MDU-keywords windhuorzwsbased, barocponbnd, keepstbndonoutflow)
• Please see the User Manual or Release Notes for further information.

Improvements 2026.01 –D-Waves & D-Morphology
11
D-Waves:
• Switch from "SWAN 41.31A" to "SWAN 41.51“
• Some defaults are changed
• SWAN output can now be coupled offline to D-Flow FM.
D-Morphology
• Mass balance option for sediment transport and morphology
• Flocculation improvements
• Improved the restart option
Status of D-Waves and D-Morphology for 3D is upgraded from Pre-alpha to Internal Beta.

Improvements 2026.01 –D-Water Quality & D-Particle
Tracking
12
D-Water Quality
• Improvement with respect to light forcing
− Allows using HD light forcing for algae
and pathogen modelling
− Avoids need to time average meteo
forcing for BLOOM users
− Not backward compatible (!)
• Small bugfixes and improvements in
testing and documentation
D-Particle Tracking
• Small bugfixes (e.g. no zoom grids needed) and improvements in testing and documentation.
• Parallelization improved.
• GUI and Input: No mdp file needed. *.inp is read and saved (backwards compatible).
• Extension to 3D: 2D velocity layers can be extracted from 3D fields

Improvements 2026.01 -1D2D GUI
13
• 1D pillar bridges are correctly written/ Support for combination of abutment and pillar bridge
• The user can specify the maximum search radius when generating 1D2D lateral links. The
default setting is 5000 meters, as used in previous releases.
• The keyword ‘closed’ for rectangular culverts can now be modified in the GUI.
• Improvements regarding ’zw’/’zwRiver’ profiles
• Various performance improvements

Improvements 2026.01- 2D3DGUI
14
• The MDU reader does not longer support multiple characters for comments in the same file.
We recommend to use hashtag to seperate a comment from input. Other characters used for
comments will result in a model fail during import or load in the GUI. Please remove those from the
MDU file.
• D-Real Time Control improvements: several bug-fixes
• Incorrect visualization of the tide defined by astronomic components has been fixed.
