Where Is Rosetta?

- 2. Hi, I’m Rosetta.I’m a robotic spacecraft carefully built and launched by the European Space Agency. I got my name from the famous Rosetta stone whose carved inscription unravelled the history of Egypt. Dimension: 2.8 x 2.1 x 2.0 m with two 14 metre long solar panels
- 3. This is Philae,my lander. It was named after the island in the Nile River where an obelisk with bilingual inscription was found. The inscription helped historians decipher the characters on Rosetta stone.
- 4. Yes, we werenamed after two greatest discoveries in the world because we are meant to uncover something grand. During our 12-year journey across the solar system, we have a super cooool mission: To study in detail the comet called 67P/Churyumov– Gerasimenko.
- 5. Our adventure beganin March 2004 on an Ariane 5 rocket in French Guiana. Then we started chasing our target comet. We crossed the asteroid belt and travelled into deep space, more than five times Earth’s distance from the Sun. Whew, that far. - 6. But on August6, 2014, we finally arrived at the comet and just last November 12, 2014, Philae dramatically landed on the comet’s icy surface. What a phenomenal feat! People celebrated, people hugged, people partied. We were even trending on Twitter. #cometlanding
- 7. We are supposedto collect as much information as we can about one of the oldest objects in our solar system. Unfortunately, Philae’s battery ran down a day after it landed on the comet. Now it’s taking a long nap. But hey, I’m still alive and kicking. I will continue to orbit the comet as it heads towards the inner solar system. I will witness how this icy comet will produce its coma and tail as it gets close to the sun. Up close and personal. Cool!
