You can create new documents from scratch or upload existing documents, spreadsheets and presentations. - #2 Teachers should all be at their own computers.Ask teachers to please log in.
- #3 Teachers will be asked to find an available computer and log on.Teachers will be asked to define cloud-based computing as a whole group discussion to serve as an introduction to the video. Group will view YouTube Video, ‘Cloud-Computing, How it all Works’ and briefly discuss how the video may have changed or enhanced their perception of the idea of cloud-computing.
- #4 Teachers will be asked to describe working on a project via e-mail. What are the pros and cons? A brief comparison will be made between e-mail collaboration and cloud-based collaboration. The presenter will note that the differences will become apparent as teachers utilize the application later in the presentation.
- #5 Presenter will open hyperlink for all to view the screen they should see. Teachers will open their accounts, if they don’t already have one.
- #6 Now that we have our Google accounts we can begin to use some of their programs. The program that we will focus on and begin to utilize today isGoogle documents, or Google docs, for short.
- #7 Introduce the video. “Here are some colleagues speaking about the advantages of Google docs. These are teachers and principals and how some of their thoughts having experienced its use in their schools and classrooms.” Play YouTube video of educators speaking about the benefits of Google docs. Answer questions and ask for comments on the video.
- #8 “This is where we get to play! Look at the upper left of the screen. You will see the words ‘you’, ‘web’, ‘images’, etc. Click on the dropdown menu of ‘more’ and click on ‘documents’. Next, we will click on the link on this slide as a group and follow the step-by-step directions.” Allow teachers ample time to create a document while covering the room to be sure everyone is moving forward.
- #9 Once you have a document created, you will pick a partner to share your document with. Ask teachers to share their documents by following the directions on the slide and make sure they can both access each other’s work. Ask teachers to please include the presenter’s e-mail address with people who may view the work. Ask teachers to choose one document to work on as a team. Note to the teachers that the button “as viewers” could be chosen in the future if you are sending a document to someone who you do not wish to change the original document, such as in the case of instructions to students for an assignment.
- #10 Circulate between groups, making sure documents have been successfully ‘shared’Answer questions, call attention to sharing features.
- #11 Ask teachers to download their own document or their shared document as a PDF, following the directions on the PP slide. Circulate to ensure each participant’s success
- #12 Ask teachers to follow the slide directions in order to create a Google presentation.Remind teachers to include the presenter’s e-mail address to the list of those who may view the work.Assure teachers the final product is not the main goal but the experience of using the medium.Have partners share presentations.
- #13 Teachers will be asked to give feedback on what they’ve learned and its use. Inform teachers of upcoming assessment survey and ask for their participation. Remind teachers that their input is anonymous and valuable. As teachers leave, distribute exit handout, a list of additional uses for Google docs for educators.
