Editor's Notes

  • #3 Storyline  Enterprise orgs don’t want to build and run data centers – they will be brokers of services that span on- and off-premises resources. Cloud first. Manage data, not data centers. In the past, CIOs have viewed their IT organizations as a builder of services for the business. But with the explosion of new web services to reach customers, incredible growth in mobile devices, new technologies like flash, the new paradigm of cloud computing, CIOs are dealing with more complexity than ever, and this is driving them to rethink their role. Today, CIOs are moving from being builders of apps and operators of data centers to becoming brokers of information services to the business. They're embracing new technologies and new service models that allow them to make IT faster, cheaper, and smarter and make their companies more responsive and more competitive Moving to the cloud: Customers want lower cost and faster provisioning with scale. Ideally, customers don’t want to manage data center – cloud first if possible. Mandate to move to cloud (we hear the “AWS mandate” all the time). While they need these things, they do not want to (cannot) give up control.
  • #4 Storyline  The attraction for public cloud infinite/flexible/inexpensive COMPUTE is too great to ignore - it’s moths to the flame. They WILL move to public cloud/hyperscalar, but won’t give it all away. They will need the blend across private & public to be seamless. Moving to the cloud means adopting multiple cloud resources that span private (enterprise DC) and public (value-add, commercial cloud service providers + hyperscalar). But customers don’t want a collection of discrete resources – they want the ability to manage the entire environment from a single purview. This necessitates seamless connections between cloud resources and the need for a cloud data fabric. Storyline  Because of the blend of resources, they will need to manage the dynamic nature of the environment. The arrows work both ways (not just toward public cloud). So it’s about CONTROL & FLEXIBILITY. The hyperscalar approach might be perceived as a long-term panacea, but reality is the masses will be consuming IT from all 3 resources for the foreseeable future. The ability to dynamically manage cloud resources will be critical.
  • #5 Storyline  For the service broker, managing across hybrid is not easy. Talk about inhibitors/needs (below). Ultimately it’s about the need to retain control. Hybrid Data Center INHIBITORS “I know I need a hybrid approach – span multiple clouds – but how do I do it?” “Where do I begin?” Inconsistent data containers and inefficient transport No ability to address data governance Hybrid Data Center NEEDS Operational efficiency – ease of use (that would come from a common data platform) Security & Compliance to facilitate proper data governance Partner ecosystem for choice without compromise Challenge ultimately comes down to While enterprise orgs are embracing a hybrid data center model that spans private and public cloud resources, they still need to maintain control of data governance, access, performance, availability, protection and security while maintaining OR IMPROVING operational efficiency.
  • #6 Storyline  NetApp is the only major storage vendor to enable customers and service providers to take advantage of a true multi-cloud strategy Seamless interconnectivity between multiple clouds Combine proven enterprise storage with multiple industry leading public clouds Global partner ecosystem of service providers to meet your needs Storyline  NetApp provides a cloud data fabric, which will facilitate the established need for seamless connection of cloud resources. Highly efficient transport between systems/clouds to enable the single purview of data management over a cloud data fabric. Customers retain flexibility and control of their data by using proven technologies such as NetApp SnapMirror and SnapVault to effectively move data between clouds.
  • #7 With public cloud, inexpensive, elastic and flexible COMPUTE from the industry’s leading public clouds are too attractive for most customers to ignore. Cloud is superior to traditional hosting for bursty workloads. Elasticity and op-ex model helps customers avoid waste and meet their actual demand. We hear that customers have a cloud mandate and by this they are looking for cost savings using the cloud They want lower costs and faster provisioning with scale Most have some bursty workloads When compared to self-hosting, public cloud, such as Microsoft Azure, lets IT meet it’s actual demand. Organizations save money and end users & IT are happier. Customers love the affordability and scale. NetApp Sales teams are confirming, customers are moving to the cloud with or without us Our customers are hiring and appointing cloud strategists who are backed by the executive team: CFO & CIO NetApp Private Storage for Microsoft Azure allows NetApp to provide value to these customers in the form of high performance, highly available and controlled NetApp storage.
  • #8 NetApp Private Storage for Microsoft Azure is a hybrid cloud solution that offers power and control and allows enterprises to transform their datacenter to best meet dynamic business needs The value of this solution is the following: Cloud benefits with proven enterprise storage – use Microsoft Azure and NetApp for enterprise workloads, tap into Azure compute for variable workloads, and provide DR or test/dev at lower costs. Your Cloud, Your terms – Put data “next to” versus “into” the cloud for greater control and security. This solution uses Azure ExpressRoute for secure connectivity to the cloud and helps companies meet compliance and sovereignty rules. Cloud mobility is enabled with NetApp Private Storage allowing you to move data in between cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure Optimize resources across private and public cloud resources – Hybrid cloud accelerates innovation and time-to market as you leverage the speed and flexibility of Azure compute. Your cloud mix can be optimized with System Center to manage on-premises or Microsoft Azure resources. Primary users Organizations currently running NetApp on premises but looking to do more in the cloud with Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services
  • #10 The connectivity of NetApp storage to Azure supports IP storage protocols only (CIFS, NFS, iSCSI). The network connectivity between Azure and the NetApp storage is provided by the Equinix Cloud Exchange. The network connection to Azure consists of either 1Gb or 10Gb Ethernet links over dedicated low-latency Layer 2 network connections. Layer 3 network routing is performed between the Azure Virtual Network and the network in the colocation facility to provide network connectivity between Azure virtual machines and NetApp storage virtual machines. The solution uses BGP to route between Azure, NetApp storage at Equinix, and the on-premises NetApp. OSPF is used to prevent routing loops and support routing between all three endpoints.
  • #11 Extending proven, agile infrastructure into the cloud. Similar stack concept to existing, on-premises Converged Infrastructure (i.e., FlexPod deployed as foundation to on-premises, private cloud), but leveraging a cloud-based infrastructure for network, server, and virtualization/platform/operating system.
  • #15 In the Multi-Cloud Application Continuity use case, there are two geographically dispersed SQL Server Availability Group (AG) nodes in an Active/Passive configuration. The primary SQL Server AG node is a Hyper-V virtual machine located in a Microsoft Private Cloud on the East coast of the US. The SQL Server AG node located in the Microsoft private cloud is connected to NetApp storage using iSCSI. The secondary SQL Server AG node is an Azure virtual machine located in an Virtual Network in the West US Region. The secondary SQL Server AG node is connected to NetApp Private storage in the colocation facility using iSCSI over a secure, low latency, high bandwidth Azure ExpressRoute network connection. Additionally, a third SQL Server AG node is shown to be located in an Amazon Web Services compute node, providing further multi-cloud fail-over capability. It is also possible to provide multi-geographic application continuity by connecting to another NetApp Private Storage colocated at another geographical location.   SQL Server AG Replication occurs using a network connection between the on premise private cloud and the Azure virtual network. In the case where there is a loss of a SQL Server node, SQL Server storage in the primary location, or a loss of an entire primary data center, the surviving SQL Server Availability Group database node database replicas are activated automatically. This application continuity model can be extended to using multiple Azure regions with NPS for Azure deployments each in different Azure regions.
