1) Zoom Lens
â–« Lenses with zoom feature, as the
name implies.
â–« Convenient lens to use. No need
to go on frenzy to change lenses.
â–« Zoom lenses may be convenient,
but they are more complex
mechanically.
â–« May break if the zoom mechanism
is badly designed or have poor
quality.
4
2) Prime Lens
â–« Opposite of zoom lens. Prime
lenses have fixed focal length.
â–« But without zoom mechanics,
prime lenses are generally less
complicated and more well-built.
â–« Prime lenses also typically last
longer than zoom lenses.

3) Wide-Angle Lens
â–« Lenses that are capable of
capturing a wide angle of view.
â–« Normally around the focal length
range of 16-35mm.
â–« Good for landscape and
environmental portrait
photography.
â–« Good for tall buildings.
6
4) Normal/General Lens
â–« Focal length range of about 35-
50mm; Also close to our human
eyes.
â–« Generally used for almost
everything – Casual, street,
portrait, food, products, etc…
▫ Don’t really have disadvantages,
just a generic range of lens.
7
5) Telephoto
▫ The “bazooka” lens. Big and bulky.
â–« Capable of shooting things far far
away.
â–« Normally used by nature and
wildlife photographers who do not
want to disturb the animals.
â–« Also sometimes used by sports
photographers, because they
cannot get too close to the action.
8
6) Macro
â–« Made to focus up close.
â–« Somewhat like a microscope.
â–« Used to take close up shots of
insects, flowers and products.
â–« Opens up a new world of
photography, otherwise invisible to
the naked eye.
