Photos which have an impact on me
This landscape photo is called island in the sky, it was taken on April the 28th by Shane
Kalyn There is an ghostly, otherworldly feeling to this photograph, it is a little island in
the middle of Tumuch Lake. The island seems to be floating in the clouds, as well as being
upside down if you look at it’s shadow closely. It screams the words ‘lost’ and ‘freedom’ to
me as the island is literally in the middle of no-where. I like that the clouds and sky seem
to be identic; where as
when generally drawing
you would ensure the sky
and water were different
shades. However if you
were to look very closely
you can see ripple in the
water from fish gulping
for air.
This simple wildlife photo is taken by Joe Motohashi, I like the contrast between two
colours that aren’t usually placed together, but still creating a remarkable effect. The
main focus is on the bird, and every feather on it. The blurred background of the flowers
help to form this picture with many minor details, giving the viewer more to look at. The
bird white eye stands out to me, especially due to being centre of the photograph. I
articulates to me the words ‘peace’ and ‘wonder’.
This landscape photo is called underwater park. Taken by Marc Henauer on May 31. It shows a
long shot of a park which floods after every spring, the melting snow creates a dreamscape in
Tragöss, Austria. I have chosen this photo because I opposition of reality e.g. park under the water
rather than part of the park. I also love the different textures and colours as you look across the
image. The blue flippers stand out to me, blending in with the water behind. The environment
although has been destroyed by the water is still placed perfectly, the angle gives a wide view of
the whole area, letting the viewer get a real feel for what is there.
This Abstract/nature
photograph is called ‘Blue
Ghost Fireflies’ taken in
North Carolina by
Spencer Black. The forest
floor is traced with the
movement of blue ghost
fireflies I like how the
photographer has taken
the detail in making the
lens close slowly in order
to capture the ‘moving’
fireflies. The darkened
trees and background
help emphasise the bright
glow from the fireflies,
showing the random
paths each one has taken.
This landscape photo
was taken by Julie
Fletcher. The dramatic
colours of water and
sky aside makes a
perfect caption of
‘perfect disaster’. The
branches of the trees
reflect bolts of lightning
and give the impression
that it has occurred
many times before. I
like how the sand still
seems golden and the
water still shimmering
blue, however the sky is
darkened, with
brightened rays from
the bolts, creating a
real contrast.
Shane Kalyn photography
Shane Kalyn
Shane Kalyn is a photographer from Canada and has a strong passion for
the ‘natural world’ (four natural elements; air, earth, fire & water), since he
can remember. He has photographing it for the last 10-15 years. He has had
many privileges of taking photos on many corners of the planet and enjoy
seeing what's around that next corner. His hobbies (travel and
photography) are slowly progressing into more and more. None of the
photographs are of animals in captivity all the animals are wild; in their
natural habitat. Most of his photos are for the national geographic
competitions/websites.
