The recently added AI Addendum contains the following statement:

you agree that all data you provide, ... will be consistent with our AUP

What is the AUP?

I went to the help centre asking what this was, but I got no result. I searched on meta but the first mentioned question just mentioned the term, without explaining it. A Google search gives different possibilities, including Acceptable Use Policy and Agreed-Upon procedures.

Please update the AI addendum or add a definition in the help centre, for explaining this term.

2 paragraphs up from the text you are quoting:

  • ...our Acceptable Use Policy.
  • You agree to comply with all applicable legal requirements regarding AI Outputs, which may require attribution to the source.

a. AI Feature Inputs & Outputs

By using an AI Feature, you agree that all data you provide, upload, and/or submit to the AI Feature (“AI Inputs”) will be consistent with our AUP

This confusion could be solved by never inventing new, mysterious TLA* in the first place.

You're right. Personally, when I write a document which will use a Tree-Letter Abbreviation (TLA), I add the abbreviation next to the explanation word between brackets and from there onwards, I keep on using the TLA abbreviation: as the abbreviation is defined on the same page, a simple search reveals what the abbreviation stands for 😊 Commented Nov 14 at 14:03

So, in this case, I would write this page as "... our Acceptable Use Policy (AUP).", and when the abbreviation is used further (" consistent with our AUP", it will be easy to understand. Commented Nov 14 at 14:06
  • The quotes you show don't explicitly link Acceptable Use Policy to the AUP acronym so just based on that page alone this is nothing more than an assumption. Commented Nov 14 at 14:22
  • @Dominique Yep that would be far less confusing. Nevertheless, the definition and link wasn't that far away. Commented Nov 14 at 14:54

@TylerH Maybe they are talking about AUP or AUP or even AUP but common sense suggests that since we just read about the Acceptable Use Policy, they are talking about AUP. Commented Nov 14 at 14:57

@Lundin: I perfectly understand what you mean. Problem is: documentation is alive, so other things might get included, put in between, ..., and before you realise that distance might have grown a lot 😊, therefore my general suggestion. Commented Nov 14 at 14:58

@Lundin: according to this URL, it also stands for "Another Useless Post" 😊 (urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=AuP) Commented Nov 14 at 15:00

@Dominique Good thing there's no such thing as useless posts on SO.meta :) Commented Nov 14 at 15:05
  • The addendum has been adapted, hence I accepted your answer. Commented Nov 18 at 15:03

AUP stands for "Acceptable Use Policy". See Stack Exchange Network Acceptable Use Policy.

@Dominique If you're asking Tsundoku personally, they're not a staff member, they can't do that. Commented Nov 14 at 12:48

@Dominique The AI addendum is already referring to that webpage. Commented Nov 14 at 12:58
