What problem does this address?

The current name of the Social Icons block suggests it is exclusively meant for linking to social media platforms. However, in practice, many themes and users also use it to display contact methods such as email addresses, messaging apps (like WhatsApp), or directions. This is typically done by manually adding custom icons.

The problem is twofold:

Discoverability – Users looking to add contact links may not intuitively search for a block called “Social Icons.”

Expectation mismatch – The name does not accurately reflect the block's actual flexibility and everyday use, which can confuse, particularly for beginners.

What is your proposed solution?

Rename the block’s title from “Social Icons” to “Social & Contact Icons.”

Other suggested names: Social Icons & Contact Links.

This change would more accurately reflect how the block is used today and improve its discoverability and clarity for users. The rename applies to the user-facing title of the block shown in the inserter panel — not necessarily the technical block name or functionality.

This solution:

  • Signals that the block is suitable for both social and contact links.
  • Helps users find the block when searching for ways to add a phone number or email. Social Icons: Add a 'Phone' icon which takes a tel: link #55718
  • Acknowledges and validates current real-world usage patterns.
  • Reduces the need for custom workarounds or extra guidance for beginners.
