Teaching tech in the Scottish Highlands — that’s how one Mixpanel engineer chose to spend his Volunteer Time Off 💡 Meet Joshua Koehler, a Software Engineer III at Mixpanel, whose recent VTO took him abroad to both give back and spark some renewed thoughtfulness for his own work: "I spent my VTO leading a tech week at a K to 9th grade school in the Scottish Highlands. I taught a younger group in the mornings and an older group in the afternoons. We explored the history of technology, dove deep into how computers work (including taking them apart!), simulated the internet by passing notes, and built websites with HTML. Beyond gaining world-class preparation to manage a high-performing engineering team of Scottish 3rd graders, I gained insight through distilling complex subjects into their elementary principles. Explaining that computers fundamentally perform only simple binary operations reminded me how all digital technology is built by layering abstractions to transpose higher-order objectives onto the narrow solution space of simple mathematics. Some things are easy to project onto this dimension; others are extremely difficult. This has direct implications for how we think about products leveraging LLMs. Considering the solution space of an LLM to be token prediction, we can use this paradigm to evaluate different use cases. We should ask: How much complexity is involved in transforming this particular product goal into text prediction? This analysis helps direct our efforts towards higher ROI objectives." That’s the power of VTO: fresh perspectives from unexpected places.
