Exclusive: Trump team freezes new NSF awards — and could soon axe hundreds of grants

The National Science Foundation is the latest US agency to be disrupted by Elon Musk’s DOGE.

Update: On the afternoon of 18 April, the NSF announced it would begin terminating active research grants. These grants contain language related to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and had been flagged in an initial review ordered by the Trump administration. In an update to agency priorities, NSF director Sethuraman Panchanathan wrote that efforts to broaden participation in research “should not preference some groups at the expense of others”.
