How to Use Technology for Competitive Advantage

Explore top LinkedIn content from expert professionals.

Summary

Using technology as a tool for competitive advantage means strategically adopting innovations like AI, data analytics, and new systems to outperform competitors, improve efficiency, and meet evolving customer needs. Businesses that succeed in this area focus on aligning technology with their goals, empowering their teams, and continuously adapting.

  • Focus on business outcomes: Define the specific results or goals your organization needs to achieve, then choose technologies that address those priorities rather than adopting tools for their novelty.
  • Invest in people: Equip your team with skills and knowledge to adapt, innovate, and make technology work for them through training and a culture of continuous learning.
  • Rethink workflows: Avoid simply automating old processes; instead, use technology to redesign and improve how work is done from the ground up.

  • After working with a number of organizations that have gone from AI crisis to competitive advantage, here's what I've seen separates success from disappointment: 1. Business Outcomes First, Technology Second Stop asking "How can we use AI?" Start asking "What business results do we need?" Leading with value creation gets you executive commitment. Leading with technology gets you pilot projects that often die. 2. Invest in People, Not Just Platforms The biggest barrier isn't technical - it's cultural. Organizations achieving significant improvements spend 10-15% of their budget on workforce transformation. Your people need to know not just HOW to use AI, but WHY and WHEN. 3. Don't Automate Yesterday's Problems Most processes were designed for information scarcity and human-only decisions. So before deploying any AI, ask: "If we were starting from scratch today, how would we solve this?" Adding AI to 10-year-old workflows is like putting a jet engine on a horse-drawn carriage. 4. Make Data Your Strategic Partner Traditional data sits passively in databases. "Intelligent data" understands context, validates itself, and prevents problems before they occur. This shift from "data management" to "intelligence orchestration" creates exponential - not linear - advantages. 5. Think Ecosystem, Not Just Efficiency While others focus on internal automation, successful organizations create network effects that benefit customers, partners, and suppliers. The pattern? Organizations that think exponentially, not incrementally, are building sustainable competitive moats while others optimize for yesterday's competition. What's your experience? Are you automating old processes or fundamentally rethinking how work gets done? #AI #DigitalTransformation #Leadership #Innovation #Strategy

Scaling tech isn't just about the latest tools or platforms. The real game-changer is ignored by 90% of companies.👇 It's the human element. Tech adoption without people-first strategies often leads to failure. Here's what successful companies do differently: 1. They invest in upskilling their workforce 2. They foster a culture of continuous learning 3. They align tech initiatives with employee needs 4. They create cross-functional teams for better integration 5. They prioritize change management from day one Remember: Your tech is only as good as the people using it. The most advanced AI can't replace human creativity and problem-solving. Your team's ability to adapt and innovate with new tech is your true competitive edge. Don't just throw money at the latest gadgets. Invest in your people. Build a tech-savvy, adaptable workforce. That's how you truly scale technology and drive transformation. Empower your team to lead the tech revolution, not just follow it.

SMBs are facing a critical challenge: how to maximize efficiency, connectivity, and communication without massive resources. The answer? Strategic AI implementation. Many small business owners tell me they're intimidated by AI. But the truth is you don't need to overhaul your entire operation overnight. The most successful AI adoptions I've seen follow these six straightforward steps: 1️⃣ Identify Immediate Needs: Look for quick wins where AI can make an immediate impact. Customer response automation is often the perfect starting point because it delivers instant value while freeing your team for higher-value work. 2️⃣ Choose User-Friendly Tools: The best AI solutions integrate seamlessly with your existing technology stack. Don't force your team to learn entirely new systems. Find tools that enhance what you're already using. 3️⃣ Start Small, Scale Gradually: Begin with focused implementations in 1-2 key areas. This builds confidence, demonstrates value, and creates organizational momentum before expanding. 4️⃣ Measure and Adjust Continuously: Set clear KPIs from the start. Monitor performance religiously and be ready to refine your AI configurations to optimize results. 5️⃣ Invest in Team Education: The most overlooked success factor? Proper training. When your team understands both the "how" and "why" behind AI tools, adoption rates soar. 6️⃣ Look Beyond Automation: While efficiency gains are valuable, the real competitive advantage comes from AI-driven insights. Let the technology reveal patterns in your business processes and customer behaviors that inform better strategic decisions. The bottom line: AI adoption doesn't require disruption. The most effective approaches complement your existing workflows, enabling incremental improvements that compound over time. What's been your experience implementing AI in your business? I'd love to hear what's working (or not) for you in the comments below. #SmallBusiness #AI #BusinessStrategy #DigitalTransformation

Before 2023, technology was largely seen as a support function in large enterprise and law firms. It offered some efficiency gains but only in rare instances (for example when firms used it to develop client solutions or proprietary solutions that allowed them to operate differently) did it truly create competitive advantage. With generative AI, that shifted dramatically. The productivity gains and output quality improvements afforded by this technology are so significant that it's a real driver of competitive advantage in most professional markets. What does that mean for #legaltech vendors and law firms? ➡️ Where the technology roadmap used to be tactical, now it's strategic. ➡️ Where previously managing partners would have been unlikely to cite technology as one of the critical items on their strategic agenda, it's now top of that agenda. ➡️ That means the level of leader concerned with product is entirely different, and the conversations to be had are different too. If you're a tech vendor, level up your approach to include senior leadership and overall business goals ➡️ Expertise is necessary, from learning and development through to hiring for new skillsets - expect more AI specific hires. ➡️ Budget for new strategic investments should be forthcoming - this is not the technology budget of old. That changes the approach on both sides. #AI #GenAI #Legal #lawyers

Hitting the Reset Button on Generative AI The past year has been a wild ride with generative AI! I've seen the excitement, the struggles, and the lessons learned. As companies rush to adopt this tech, it's time for a reset – a moment to figure out how to turn this buzz into true competitive advantage. Many of us (myself included!) jumped on the bandwagon in 2023. But now, it's clear that real success takes more than just enthusiasm. It's about rewiring how we innovate and scale solutions throughout our organizations. Here's my take: 💡 Find your sweet spot. Blanket experimentation won't win. Where can generative AI truly make your company excel? Focus there. 💡Data, data, data. Gen AI thrives on the good stuff. Invest in data quality and unlock the value of unstructured data (think text, images!). 💡Invest in your people. Don't just buy licenses, train your existing workforce on gen AI - prompt engineering, fine-tuning, those skills. It's doable! 💡Centralize for scale (but responsibly). A dedicated team isn't control, it's about setting standards for safe, efficient scaling of models and tools. 💡Don't forget the tech backbone. Operationalizing a little chatbot is hard enough, let alone a robust solution. Prioritize the tech architecture to make it work. Let's be honest, this is a pivotal moment for generative AI. Done right, the competitive advantage is real. But it requires a strategic reset. #generativeAI #competitiveadvantage #digitaltransformation #AI #leadership

3 in every 4 customers believe it takes too long to reach a live agent. Now imagine being able to deliver service and helping customers twice as fast as your competition. That's a serious competitive advantage. Here’s how you can make it happen 👇 1. Implement a call-back system to free customers from the frustration of waiting. 2. Use AI-powered chatbots to reduce the load on your team and speed up response time. 3. Equip your team with comprehensive training to handle inquiries more efficiently. In a world where speed is key, imagine not just meeting but exceeding customer expectations. By implementing these strategies, you're not just cutting wait times. You're crafting an unparalleled customer experience.

Everyone says to “embrace the latest technology”. But almost nobody tells you how. If they won’t, I will… Here’s how to leverage new tech in 7 simple steps: Step 1 - Identify key trends. Example ↳ Review top tech blogs weekly to spot trends. Step 2 - Assess relevance. Example ↳ Determine if AI aligns with your business needs. Not every trend will align and that's okay. Step 3 - Evaluate tools. Example ↳ Compare CRM platforms for your marketing strategy. Step 4 - Plan integration. Example ↳ Develop a roadmap for implementing cloud solutions. Step 5 - Train your team. Example ↳ Organize workshops on the latest software solutions. Step 6 - Monitor performance. Example ↳ Use analytics to track tech impact on growth. Step 7 - Stay adaptable. Example ↳ Be ready to pivot if a tool underperforms. Technology isn't just about what's new—it's about what fits your business. P.S. How do you stay ahead in the fast-changing tech world?

Amidst the noise and FOMO surrounding AI, here's a calm and refreshing perspective: AI is unlikely to create new sustaining advantages for organizations, but it can certainly enhance existing competitive edges! I’ve learnt that business leaders can consider three horizons when contemplating AI's impact on their business : 1. Productivity : How to be faster / more cost-effective in what you do 2. Growth : How to be better at the things you do 3. Competitive advantage : How to build distinctive capabilities that keep you consistently ahead of others at what you do While examples of enhanced productivity and growth abound, I find it harder to define instances of new competitive advantage having been created through AI. A recent Harvard Business Review article (link in comments below) sheds light on this dilemma, suggesting that instead of chasing new sustaining advantages, leaders should focus on leveraging AI to amplify current competitive strengths. The authors caution that as AI becomes ubiquitous in industries, early gains may be fleeting, making it crucial for businesses to use AI to fortify their current advantages. An insightful read for leaders thinking about their AI approach in a rapidly evolving landscape. #AIstrategy
