Reimagine "Culture Fit" as "Culture Add" → Stop hiring people who think just like you. Fresh perspectives lead to better solutions. 2. Welcome New Ideas → Some team members may hesitate to speak up based on their culture. Create ways for everyone to share ideas comfortably. 3. Listen to the Quiet Ones → Your quietest team members might have the best ideas. Find ways to hear from everyone, not just the loudest voices. 4. Make Language Work For You, Not Against You → Great ideas don't need perfect English. Give people different ways to share their thoughts. 5. Learn from Differences → Each culture has unique ways of solving problems. Use these differences to your advantage. 6. I built a 400 people business with a team that speaks 17 languages, 7 Countries & 6 religions. Here's what I learned (and why you should, too). ‘Diversity hires’ get a bad rap, but I think they’re a strategic advantage. I first had this thought when I trained as a chef, working with people of different ethnicities. People from different backgrounds had different thought processes, opinions, and strengths. But for some odd reason, I could almost always sense hostility between everyone. Instead of blending in together, they used to club with people of the same background. This practice was not limited to the kitchen but had spread to the whole workplace, even affecting the hiring. Organizations were more likely to onboard people with a particular caste, religion, or ethnicity. And the preference was obvious with promotions too. I was always perplexed while witnessing these practices, so when I started my venture, I knew I had to remove biases from my head systematically and my team to attract great talent. My goal was to build a workplace, rich not only in demographics but also ideas and thoughts. This choice of hiring people from diverse backgrounds did not sit well with many. Eyebrows were raised, and questions were asked. But as time passed, everyone started to warm up to each other. This blurred the lines of differences and a newfound respect for diversity emerged in everyone. With this transformation, we were able to: - Bring diverse perspectives and ideas to the table. - Build a diverse and vibrant work culture. - Clock in exponential growth. - Find the right talent. Due to the amazing blend of our diverse team, we could build a synergy that led to innovative solutions and an empathetic work environment that everyone cherished. This taught me a great lesson: When you encourage diversity in the workplace, you set yourself on a path of growth and development. Know Thy Team Invest time to understand each member’s background, culture, strengths, and weaknesses. This isn’t “wasted” time; it’s foundational work that informs every decision you make later. 🌍 2. Flex Your Leadership Style One size doesn’t fit all. You’ve got to be able to adapt your leadership style to meet different needs. Some people might want direct, hands-on guidance, while others excel with autonomy. Be like a chameleon—adaptive and responsive. 🦎 3. Create an Inclusive Environment Make it clear that every voice is valued. Set up structured ways to gather input, like regular team meetings where everyone contributes or anonymous suggestion boxes. Remember, inclusivity breeds engagement. 🗣️👂🏼 4. Cultural Intelligence is Your Best Friend Understand the cultures you’re working with deeply and inherently. This is where your Cultural Intelligence (CQ) comes in. The better you understand yours and your team’s diverse backgrounds, the more effective your communication and conflict resolution will be. 🌐🫱🏼🫲🏾 5. Acknowledge and Celebrate Differences Different doesn’t mean deficient. Celebrate and acknowledge different abilities, beliefs, values, holidays, traditions, and use them as learning opportunities for the entire team. 🎉🌈 6. Set Clear Goals but Allow Different Paths Clear expectations eliminate confusion. However, be flexible in how each team member achieves these goals based on their strengths and varying perspectives. 🎯 7. Feedback is a Two-Way Street Encourage open and constructive feedback. Don’t just provide it, ask for it, too. Let your team know that you’re learning from them as much as they’re learning from you. 🔄 📣 Challenge 🎯 Start by picking just one of these strategies to focus on this week.
