    Most of my academic career was dedicated to working on interdisciplinary research projects. In the early days, I found there was little consideration for the inherent challenges of this type of work, particularly in managing power dynamics across the STEM/social science disciplinary divide. While there is a lot to be gained from interdisciplinary research, it can be a hard road to walk. It’s so refreshing to see interdisciplinary research gaining more prominence from funders, and critically, a more intentional approach to creating supportive spaces for people to communicate across disciplinary divides. Here are some key lessons I learnt along the (sometimes rocky) journey: 🔹Language Matters: Ensure everyone on the team understands the key terms used to articulate the research. For instance, on an antimicrobial resistance project I was working on, the term ‘driver’ meant different things to different academics. Spending time interrogating this helped the team to have a shared understanding of the objectives of the project. 🔹 Regular Knowledge-Sharing Sessions: Building an understanding of what each team member is doing to contribute to the project can help to foster a positive working environment. Facilitated sessions, where each team member presents their work, can help to foster a shared understanding. For me, learning about how microbiological sampling techniques worked was helpful when developing my own ethnographic study. 🔹 Foster a Culture of Mutual Respect: Post-docs and project administration staff, often the hardest working, sometimes see their contributions rendered invisible. I cannot stress enough how vital it is to create an environment where all disciplines and team members are valued equally. Avoid empty platitudes; good leadership comes with actively listening to each other and recognising that the project wouldn’t happen without every member of the team. 🔹 Utilise Facilitation Techniques: Don’t assume that a group will naturally come together; intentional facilitation, such as round-robin discussions, ensures everyone has a chance to contribute. This can also help to manage power dynamics and give voice to quieter members. 🔹Create a Psychologically safe space: When people do not feel safe to share their ideas, they will not take risks and experiment. Safe spaces for learning are essential; public criticism and shaming can deter people from sharing. Encourage team members to explore ideas outside their comfort zones in a way that is supportive. Creating safe spaces is the only way people will experiment together. Interdisciplinary research can indeed be a hard road to walk, but the journey is enriched with diverse perspectives and the potential for groundbreaking discoveries. It's about managing the complexities with care and ensuring every voice is heard and respected.     If I had to explain the importance of collaboration when designing utility-scale solar PV projects in the simplest possible way, I’d draw this. Each color in this layout shows the highest cost blocks from one discipline’s perspective — civil, electrical, or structural. But the black blocks? Those are the overall highest cost blocks, when you consider everything together. None of them were identified by any single team. This is what happens when disciplines work in silos. Each makes sound decisions in their own domain, but the combined result is inefficient — and expensive. That’s why we built #PVFARM. Our goal is to create multidisciplinary feedback loops that help teams see the whole picture early and make better design decisions, together.     Working in elite sport, I spend a lot of time as part of multidisciplinary teams. Coaches, physios, S&C coaches - a range of specialists support any sports team or individual athlete's success. While having individual experts is important, having a team working in tune with each other is as important. In the world of elite sport, having an effective multidisciplinary team can make all the difference between good and exceptional performances for many reasons. Comprehensive Expertise: An effective multidisciplinary team brings together experts from various fields, including psychology, nutrition, S&C, and physiotherapy. This wealth of knowledge creates a comprehensive support system that addresses all aspects of physical and mental well-being. Tailoring: Athlete are all unique, and a one-size-fits-all approach won't cut it. A team allows for personalised training and interventions, considering an athlete's strengths, weaknesses, and needs. This approach maximises performance and minimises the risk. Well-being: Athletes face tremendous physical and mental demands. A multidisciplinary team takes care of not only physical health but also their mental and emotional well-being. This approach ensures athletes remain mentally resilient, motivated, and focused. Injuries: The best defence is a good offence. An effective team focuses on injury prevention strategies, optimising an athlete's condition to reduce the risk of injuries. Moreover, in the event of injury, the team can collaborate on a tailored plan for recovery. Analysis: Monitoring progress and analysing performance data are vital for improvement. The team tracks relevant metrics and collaboratively interprets the data to fine-tune training methods. Collaboration: Decisions are not made in isolation. A team can foster open communication, where members share insights and perspectives to make decisions that benefit the athlete's overall development. Support: Elite sport can be emotionally taxing, especially during high-stakes competitions. A reliable multidisciplinary team provides athletes with a support system during these moments, enhancing their mental resilience and coping mechanisms. Adaptability: Staying ahead requires adaptability. A multidisciplinary team stays abreast of the latest research, technology, and best practices to adapt training and strategies for optimal performance. Athlete Development: Elite athletes' careers span years if not decades. A well-structured multidisciplinary team focuses on the athlete's long-term development, ensuring they thrive in the present and throughout their career. Celebrating Success Together: Behind every athlete's triumph, there's an entire team of dedicated professionals who played an integral role in their journey. Acting as the bridge between engineering, marketing, and business strategy, turning complex ideas into tangible, user-centric solutions. Clear communication was crucial to ensure everyone understood the project's vision and goals… and stay on track _Holistic Problem Solver... Integrating insights from various disciplines allowed us to approach problems from multiple angles in real time. This requires input from various departments, including Cardiology, Nutrition, and Physical Therapy. To foster collaboration, you suggest, “Let’s schedule regular multidisciplinary team meetings where each department can share their insights and updates on patient progress. We’ll use these sessions to ensure that our care plans are fully integrated and that we’re all working towards the same patient outcomes.” By bringing everyone together, you break down silos and ensure that each department’s expertise is utilized, leading to better patient care. Use Case 2: Enhancing Collaboration in a Quality Improvement Project In another scenario, you’re working on a quality improvement project aimed at reducing hospital readmission rates.
