Dear SOC Heroes, To detect and respond to any attack correctly, you must make a threat modeling to your business to understand all attacks and identify their attack surface and impact, then you should map each attack to an incident response framework that your organization follows. A well-structured approach that you follow, will enable you to manage and mitigate the impact of any attack. For example, let's map a data exfiltration attack to the NIST incident response framework. 1. Preparation - Establish Baselines: Understand normal data flows and behaviors within your network. - Implement Monitoring Tools: Deploy and configure SIEM, DLP, and IDS/IPS. - Develop Incident Response Plans: Have clear procedures and roles defined for responding to data exfiltration incidents. 2. Detection - Monitor Network Traffic: Look for unusual data transfer volumes, particularly to external IP addresses. - Analyze Logs: Check logs from firewalls, proxies, and network devices for anomalies. - Utilize Behavioral Analytics: Use tools to detect deviations from normal user and system behavior. - Build SIEM Use-Cases: Configure alerts for potential exfiltration activities, such as large data transfers or access to sensitive files. 3. Identification - Correlate Events: Use SIEM to correlate alerts and logs from different sources to identify patterns. - Validate Alerts: Confirm that alerts are not false positives by cross-referencing with known baselines and activities. - Identify Data Sources: Determine which data was accessed and potentially exfiltrated. 4. Containment - Isolate Affected Systems: Disconnect compromised systems from the network to prevent further data loss. - Block Malicious Traffic: Implement firewall rules to block data exfiltration channels. - Reset Credentials: Change passwords and revoke access for compromised accounts. 5. Eradication - Remove Malware: Conduct a thorough scan and clean-up of affected systems to remove any malicious software. - Patch Vulnerabilities: Apply patches and updates to fix exploited vulnerabilities. - Secure Configurations: Ensure systems and network configurations follow best security practices. 6. Recovery - Restore Systems: Rebuild or restore systems from clean backups. - Monitor for Recurrence: Closely watch the affected systems for signs of recurring issues. - Communicate: Inform clients/stakeholders and possibly affected individuals as required by law and policy. 7. Post-Incident Analysis - Conduct a Root Cause Analysis: Determine and document how the exfiltration occurred and why it wasn't detected earlier. - Review and Improve: Update security policies, incident response plans, and monitoring tools based on lessons learned. The Australian National Office of Cyber Security (NOCS) has completed a review of the HWL Ebsworth incident. What are the lessons learned?* HWL Ebsworth is a law firm used by many organisations, and in particular a number of government agencies. In April 2023, the firm discovered that 2.2 million documents (3.6 TB of data) had been exfiltrated by Russia-based criminal syndicate ALPHV/BlackCat. The data breach triggered a massive response effort, coordinated by the newly established National Cyber Security Coordinator, under the National Office of Cyber Security. The NOCS has just completed a review of the incident. Here is a summary of the highlights: 🔷 Central coordination significantly reduces the burden on impacted entities and supports shared understanding and collective action. 🔷 Consistent and accurate public communications are important for developing and upholding transparency and trust. 🔷 Genuine engagement between government and industry during cyber security incidents fosters trust. 🔷 Expectations around the timeliness and accuracy of data analysis need careful management. 🔷 Precise and thoughtful management of working group membership is essential for a successful response. 🔷 Broader groups of stakeholders, encompassing both public and private sectors, should be included in the coordinated response. 🔷 Quick sharing of compromised identity information to government issuing agencies can mitigate ongoing harm. 🔷 The ongoing role of regulatory agencies in coordinated consequence management requires careful consideration. A particular point of interest highlighted in the review was the granting of a court injunction, to prevent further publication of information exposed during the breach, as a means to protect affected individuals and organisations. The overarching themes of coordination, collaboration, trust, and transparency are definitely applicable to incident response efforts more broadly. * "Lessons learned" is the correct term. "Learnings" is not a real word, and will never be a real word.

But how you comply and the approach you take can define your business’s future. The right legal strategy can mean the difference between emerging stronger, with reinforced stakeholder trust, or coming out battered and bruised. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘁𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳. Cyber incidents happen—even to the best-prepared businesses. Regulators, customers, and stakeholders judge you on your response. If you act efficiently, effectively, and strategically, you can not only protect your brand but actually reduce regulatory scrutiny. Being overly defensive and combative might help you avoid court, but if it destroys trust, the long-term damage could far outweigh any short-term legal cost (not to say there are not times when this approach is warranted!). Every company will be breached. Not if. When. Breaches are like fires. You can follow every building code, install alarms and sprinklers, buy fire-retardant furniture—and still, something can spark. That’s why fire departments use a 4-minute rule: they’re on scene within four minutes of dispatch. Because speed limits damage, saves lives, and stops spread. Cybersecurity is no different. Yet many small/mid sizedbusinesses & IT providers treat security as a checkbox: 🛑 Slap an RMM on an endpoint. 🛑 Drop in an EDR. ✅ Declare the network "monitored." That’s not monitoring. That’s wishful thinking. You should design for the inevitable breaches using a Security First apporach. The best approach: philosophy is rooted in preparedness, not just prevention: ▶️ The severity of a breach = What and how much data was accessed ▶️ The impact of a breach = Downtime, legal exposure, and brand damage. 🔹 Example 1: Enterprise Breach. Client data and internal docs were accessed —but most of it was already public. No outage. Minimal cost. Severity: Low. Impact: Low. 🔹 Example 2: Business Email Compromise. Inbox data wasn’t sensitive—but phishing emails triggered chaos. Internal staff froze, customers were exposed, and operations halted. Severity: Low. Impact: High. Security Mantras: -Breaches are inevitable. -Rapid detection limits damage. -Zero Trust and least privilege reduce blast radius (what you should be doing but no one is) -Total visibility is non-negotiable. If you can’t see what the attacker did, you can’t recover confidently. This means SIEM is necessary part of a modern stack even for SMBs -Security isn’t about what you install. You just had a HIPAA breach? Breathe.....then move fast! (Save this post for the future) When protected health info (PHI) leaks, the first 24 hours will most likely determine if you’ll be remembered for chaos or competence. So today, I have brought you a simple blueprint I'd follow 👇🏾 1. Quickly isolate the affected systems, lock down access, and kick off a forensic investigation so you know what, when, and how; before attackers erase the breadcrumbs. 2. Document the nature of the PHI, who touched it, whether it was actually viewed/acquired, and how much you’ve mitigated so far. If the probability of compromise isn’t “low,” it’s officially a reportable breach. 3. Notify every affected individual “without unreasonable delay” and absolutely no later than Day 60. If the breach hit 500+ people, please make sure to tell HHS and the media at the same time. If fewer than 500 were impacted by the breach, you'll only need to log it and include it in your annual HHS report. 4. HIPAA spells out the must‑haves: what happened, which data types were exposed, the steps people should take, what you’ve done to plug the hole, and a hotline/email for questions. Bonus points if you provide for free credit‑monitoring codes to those impacted. 5. Lastly, please patch the root cause, retrain staff, and update policies, then keep every action in a breach file. Good‑faith compliance radically lowers penalties and proves you’re serious about protecting patient trust. Step 1: Assemble Your Response Team ⚔ Activate your incident response team immediately. This includes your IT experts and legal counsel. Having a well-prepared plan isn’t just useful; it’s essential. Step 2: Engage Forensic Experts 🔎 Bring in an independent forensic team. These digital detectives will help you understand the extent of the breach and gather critical evidence without contaminating the scene. Think of them as the CSI for your data-center. Step 3: Contain the Breach 💢 Isolate affected systems to prevent the breach from spreading. However, avoid shutting down machines until your forensic team arrives, as this could destroy valuable evidence. Change all passwords and review access logs to cut off unauthorized access. “The breach wasn’t the problem. Their silence was.” At 2:14 AM on a quiet Friday, a fintech startup received an alert from their cloud monitoring system: “Unusual login detected from Moscow.” The attacker had compromised a DevOps engineer’s credentials through a phishing email days earlier. No MFA. No IP restrictions. Full admin access. But instead of activating their incident response plan immediately, the CTO sent a message to the team: “Let’s wait until morning and see if it happens again.” By 6:00 AM, the attacker had accessed their database. By 9:00 AM, funds were moved from customer wallets. By 12 noon, customers were tweeting: “where is my money?”, “is your app hacked?”, “why are you not responding?“ Internally? Serious Chaos | No war room | No comms plan | No clear incident lead | No logs preserved | No regulators notified. Instead of controlling the narrative, they were trapped in it. That is what happens when incident response is treated like a policy instead of a practice. Incident Response (IR) isn’t about if you’ll be attacked. It is about how fast you detect, contain, communicate, and recover when the inevitable happens. Every organization—regardless of size—must have a tested, documented, and regularly updated cybersecurity incident response plan. Not just for technical teams, but also for: Comms teams (what to say, when) Executives (who makes decisions?) Legal teams (what are your obligations?) Customer support (what to tell users/customers) As IT Auditors and Cybersecurity Professionals, our job is not just to ask: “Do you have a plan?”We must test: If the plan updated?
