For the leap first crowd: 1. Know that you will get your input into the conversation eventually. You can intentionally make space for others to speak first by inviting them. 2. Allow space for silence. Your physical discomfort in staying quiet aside; count to 30 before talking if nobody else is speaking. 3. Edit your comments and your questions. Is what I’m about to say helpful to others in the room? Is there a better time and place to express myself? Is it possible that saying nothing right now frees us to move forward? 4. Be clear about your desired outcome before starting the discussion. Left to habit, we may need to be correct. Focusing on contribution, we may get it right with the help of the people in the room, building ownership, and successfully implementing the decision. For the more reluctant: 1. Set an intention to ask one question rooted in curiosity. Questions help others deepen their understanding with the added benefit of connecting with the speaker. 2. When we speak up, we demonstrate that we care about the topic and are engaged. People create stories out of thin air when we are silent.
