Job searching shouldn't feel like a second full-time job. 💼 Yet most people spend 40+ hours a week on applications. With worse results than those spending 10. The difference? If you're in the job market, you might have wondered how a recruiter would approach it. As a Recruiter that's #OpenToWork, I'll tell you! I've been on the market roughly every six months for the last two years (contract roles), and the recommendations below have helped me land my next gig within a 3-week average. Let's start with my tech stack: • Teal for tracking applications • Simplify for auto-filling application forms • Calendly for sharing my availability with Recruiters • Lavender 💜 for writing tips and tracking email opens • Grammarly for checking spelling, grammar, etc., on emails and apps • ChatGPT for writing cover letters and answering application questions • GPTZero for revising ChatGPT's responses and making them sound human Here's where I primarily look for jobs: • LinkedIn • Welcome to the Jungle (fka Otta) Yup, that's it! Sometimes, I check out Indeed, FlexJobs, or others, but I have the most success with these two platforms. Here's my search strategy: • I check the Jobs tab on LinkedIn's mobile app (yes, specifically the mobile app) multiple times daily. I review 'Top job picks for you' and other categories on the main Jobs page, saving jobs but not applying yet. Once I've saved everything that looks good, I use my laptop to apply. I start with the roles posted most recently and work my way back. • At 1 PM Mountain daily, I review the jobs from Welcome to the Jungle's push notification on my phone, save jobs of interest, and use my laptop to apply immediately. • Multiple times daily, I scroll my LinkedIn feed in search of recruiters and hiring managers posting about their open roles, and I apply immediately to any I find. If it's relevant or seems needed, I comment as well. • 2-3x weekly, I use the search function on LinkedIn Jobs, primarily targeting Hybrid roles in my area. Searching across the U.S. for a remote role yields too many results (I'd be scrolling for hours). • Once a week or less, I send a personalized message to my close contacts requesting referrals to opportunities in their network. • Occasionally (or never), I send a cold InMail or email to a Hiring Manager or Recruiter. Here are some other things I do: • I try to post or comment regularly on LinkedIn. • My green banner is always on (until I find my next role)! • I thoroughly research each company I'm interviewing with. • I send connection requests to Recruiters at companies of interest, even if there isn't an open role. Here are some things I DON'T do (anymore): • Tailor my resume to each job. • Pay for resume writing, job coaching, etc. • Cold call Hiring Managers (I tried it once; it backfired). I can't guarantee that what works for me will work for you, but try it! I'll admit that a lot of my success stems from my willingness to work contract jobs, but being adaptable to what the market offers is essential as a candidate. Platforms I have used to job search + a list of remote job sites I wish I knew about during my search! I found my current job on LinkedIn (still shocked), but honestly, I had no idea how many other websites were out there with remote job listings. As a first-gen trying to navigate the job world solo, I stuck to what I knew: ✅ LinkedIn ✅ Indeed ✅ Glassdoor ✅ Wellfound (formerly AngelList Talent) ✅ The Mom Project During my job hunt, I kept stumbling across other platforms. I know there are so many people still relying on LinkedIn and Indeed, so here are some platforms that might help you land your next job: 📌 Most Practical (easy to use + solid range of jobs): These sites are beginner-friendly and regularly updated with legit opportunities. - We Work Remotely - Jobspresso - The Mom Project - Outsourcey - PeoplePerHour - SolidGigs - Wellfound - Working Nomads 🔥 Most Popular (based on what I saw my network using): - LinkedIn - Indeed - Glassdoor - Upwork - Fiverr - Freelancer 🎯 Best for Results (high-quality jobs + vetted opportunities): Specifically in tech and creative fields. - Toptal - 99designs - HireJar - Arc.dev - Braintrust - Remotebase - Turing - Working Not Working - Paraform - Hyring - Freelancing For Good (FFG) Job search tip: If you still prefer LinkedIn, Glassdoor, or Indeed, I would try to filter by: - “Remote” - “Work From Home” - “Anywhere” Rooting for everyone looking to pivot or searching for their next role! 🌱
