    Ghost at your own risk. . . As a recruiter, one of the hardest parts of my job is making those difficult calls to tell candidates we are not moving forward with their application. Recently, I made one of these calls, and the candidate's response left a lasting impression on me. Instead of disappointment or frustration, he thanked me. He thanked me for taking the time to let him know and not ghosting him. He appreciated the feedback and felt encouraged to stay in touch for future opportunities. This interaction reaffirmed a critical lesson: transparency and respect in the recruitment process are invaluable. Ghosting candidates not only damages individual relationships but also impacts our broader recruiting efforts. When candidates feel ignored or disrespected, they are less likely to engage with us in the future, and even if they do, the relationship often starts with a trust deficit. Clear and honest communication fosters trust and builds a positive reputation. It's about treating candidates with the dignity they deserve, regardless of the outcome. When we provide feedback, we offer them a chance to improve and grow, and when we communicate promptly, we show respect for their time and effort. As recruiters, our role is not just to fill positions but to build networks and cultivate talent. Every interaction is an opportunity to strengthen our professional community. By ensuring that every candidate, successful or not, feels valued and respected, we create a foundation of trust that benefits everyone involved. Let's commit to better practices in recruitment.     My dad always stressed the importance of transparency. He ran his own architectural business, and, as with many entrepreneurial endeavors, there were ups and downs along the way. Even as kids, we knew what we were working with - “This is how much we earned, this is how much we’ll pay in taxes.” “This is how much our electricity cost in February.” ← 👀👀👀 “Here’s what we invested in, here’s how much we earned.” It was never anything dramatic - my father was good with money and always had a contingency plan - but he made sure we understood how much was in the bank account, what our budget was for the year, how much things cost, what kind of vacation we could afford, that sort of thing. He wanted us prepared for the future. I appreciated my dad’s transparency. It provided clarity. And I always try to do the same with my teams. Transparency builds trust and expertise, it is the foundation of developing the next set of leaders and helps prepare your teams by giving them firsthand experience through good and bad times, so they don’t question the fragility or health of the company. I strive to be frank in those discussions - here’s how we’re doing, here’s what we need to improve, here’s what will happen if we don't achieve X,Y, and Z, and here’s what will happen when we do! It’s the best way to learn, it instills confidence and trust, and it allows your teams to focus on the work, not their fears of what’s being withheld.

  • Lessons from a Lifelong Recruiter. . . Invest, Communicate, Be Transparent Invest Start building your trusted relationships from your earliest days with your candidates, clients, colleagues and network. And as my valued friend and former colleague always told me, expect to make many, many deposits in those relationships before you ever ask for a withdrawal - see Donald Weber, I was listening! Communicate Communicate, or even overcommunicate, with candidates and clients alike. You build trust by sharing what you know, even if you don't know anything new. There is little worse for the candidate or client experience than that dreaded "black hole", devoid of any communication. Transparent Build credibility and trust with candidates, clients and colleagues alike by being as transparent as you possibly can be while respecting confidential boundaries. Invest, Communicate and Be Transparent - if you build these habits it will help keep you successful for the long game. Recruiting friends, what would you add?
