Summary

The lack of female role models in shipping careers refers to the limited visibility and representation of women in leadership or influential positions within the shipping and logistics industry. This gap makes it harder for aspiring women to see career paths or feel encouraged to join and progress in the field.

  • Promote visibility: Share stories and successes of women working in shipping to help inspire and guide others considering a career in the industry.
  • Encourage mentorship: Create opportunities for experienced professionals to support and mentor young women, making it easier for them to navigate challenges and advance.
  • Review workplace policies: Assess and improve company policies around safety, work-life balance, and equal pay to help attract and retain more women in shipping roles.

  • #WomensHistoryMonth Captain Nancy Wagner was the first female California Bar Pilot, sworn in by the Board of Pilot Commissioners in 1990 as the first woman to serve as a maritime pilot in the United States. A trailblazer in the industry, she graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point in 1978 as part of the first class of women admitted to federal service academies. She earned her master’s license in 1985 and became the first female Kings Point graduate to achieve this credential. Wagner faced significant challenges early in her career, including skepticism from male colleagues who questioned her qualifications and accused her of "taking a job away from a man with a family". Despite these obstacles, she rose to prominence as a San Francisco Bay ship pilot, navigating large vessels through the Golden Gate’s treacherous waters for 25 years before retiring in 2015. Her career also included service in the U.S. Navy Reserve, though regulations at the time barred her from serving on warships despite her expertise. Wagner’s legacy includes mentoring future generations of mariners and advocating for women in maritime professions. Her 2018 speech to Kings Point graduates encapsulated her philosophy: "Live your dream". She was inducted into the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy’s Hall of Distinguished Graduates for her maritime achievements. She remains a symbol of perseverance in a traditionally male-dominated field. Just seven months ago, the group CEO of Columbia Shipmanagement said at the WISTA conference (of ALL places) that WISTA is an "anachronism" and that the "debate has moved on" around "sexual discrimination, gender discrimination, how do we attract more women into shipping". Data gathered in the 2024 IMO-Wista Women in Maritime Survey shows this to be patently untrue. Worryingly, the figures show the female workforce is shrinking. Women account for under 19% of the total workforce sampled, compared with 26% in 2021, the survey found. Elpi Petraki, WISTA International president, said: “The new data also shows how opportunities across the industry continue to be limited for women due to barriers such as gender stereotyping, workplace safety concerns, a lack of family-friendly policies and the ongoing gender pay gap.” The survey itself goes to show what a powerful force WISTA can be in identifying action points, measuring progress and holding the industry to account with deeds, not words for women in shipping. My ace colleague Sandra Boga has the story. https://lnkd.in/eRezjrT3 * It should be noted that he has never walked these comments back. Columbia Group sadly has no female directors on the board of its group entity or on the board of the shipmanagement subsidiary for which it is best known.
