Introducing Elevar’s Free Consent Banner Audit Tool

If you’re like many Shopify merchants (or marketers) I’ve worked with, you’ve probably wondered: Is my cookie consent banner actually doing its job? With all the privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA, etc.), it’s crucial to ensure your banner isn’t just a pretty pop-up, it needs to block or allow tracking at the right times.

Today, I’m excited to share a new free tool our team at Elevar built to help you check exactly that, in minutes and without any hassle.

Why Check Your Cookie Banner?

Managing consent banners can be a headache and often a bit of a blind spot. You might set up a cookie banner and assume you’re compliant, but how do you know if Google Analytics or Facebook Pixel is truly held back until a user consents? Or if you’re inadvertently not collecting data you could be (because the banner is misconfigured)? Missteps here can mean compliance risks (nobody wants GDPR fines or angry regulators) or lost data that throws off your marketing analytics. This is a real-world issue I see often. which is why a quick checkup can be so valuable.

How the Free Audit Tool Works

Elevar’s Consent Audit Tool is a simple way to audit your Shopify store’s consent banner behavior across major privacy regimes.

It works like this:

  • Go to the auditor page here.
  • Enter your store URL and your email address. (That’s it – no complex setup required.)
  • Hit “Start” and wait about 2–5 minutes. The tool will simulate visitors from different regions (like California, Europe, etc.) to see how your banner responds under each privacy law.
  • Check your email for a detailed report. The audit report will tell you if your banner is configured properly or not, and highlight any issues it finds.

No coding, no engineers, no weeks of waiting, just a nearly instant audit delivered to you. We built the tool to recognize popular consent management setups (Shopify’s native consent banner, OneTrust, Cookiebot, Pandectes, etc.), so it can likely analyze whatever solution you’re using.

What You Get in the Report

The report is straightforward and easy to follow. It shows you, for each relevant region or law, whether your consent banner behavior is compliant or not. For example, it will check if CCPA (California’s law, which uses an opt-out model) is correctly handled – i.e. your default state allows tracking until the user opts out. It will also check GDPR scenarios (like visitors from the EU or UK, where an opt-in model is required) to confirm that no non-essential cookies or trackers fire before consent is given. If something’s misconfigured, the report flags it in plain language – e.g. “Non-compliant: Facebook Pixel fires before consent in EU (GDPR)”. And if everything looks good, you’ll see a nice green light for that, too.

In short, you get a quick thumbs-up or thumbs-down on your banner’s setup for each region, with details on what’s happening. This makes it easy to spot where you might need to fix your settings before they become bigger problems.

Important Note (Not Legal Advice!)

This tool is not a substitute for professional legal advice. Think of it as a helpful diagnostic or a pre-check. It can alert you to potential consent compliance issues (so you can address them early), but it doesn’t certify you as legally compliant. Always double-check with your legal team or advisors to ensure full compliance with all regulations. We built this to make your life easier and catch obvious problems – final verification should always be done on your end.

For a full walkthrough of the Consent Audit Tool and what the report looks like, I recorded a quick video tutorial. In the video, I run through an example audit and explain each section of the report in detail.

I hope you find this new free tool useful! It only takes a few minutes to use, and it can save you a ton of uncertainty (and potential headaches) regarding your Shopify store’s cookie banner. Feel free to give it a try, and let me know if you have any feedback or questions!
