Common data risks, part 1

- Let's talk about protecting data. And let's start by talking about common risks to data. Data has three states that it can be in. It could be at rest, in transit or in use. At rest means that it's just stored. It's not doing anything at the moment. It could be on your phone, it could be in the cloud, on a server, on a hard drive, removable media, an SD card. If it's just not in use, if it's just being stored right now, even if it's in my pocket and I'm walking along, it's still considered at rest. That's data at rest. Data in transit is when it's being actively transmitted across a network. Wifi, cellular, Bluetooth, near field, infrared. I don't think any phones do infrared anymore, but if it's being actively transmitted, that's data in transit. And then data in use is when it's loaded into RAM and it is either being processed on the CPU or about to be or just has been.
