Normalizing differences
- Difference is everywhere within society, and as a result, society is naturally diverse. We need to flip our thinking from viewing differences as inadequacies or weaknesses and making someone less worthy of an opportunity. It's important to keep a check on our thought processes and privilege, specifically when looking at disability. We need to be aware of ableism. Ableism is a concept based on the idea within society that the perfect person exists, which then equates to normality. Society's ideas of optimal intelligence, physicality, excellence, and productivity amongst other things has led to a systemic oppression, which we need to be able to monitor so that we can ensure that it is not impacting our actions and decisions when we are interacting with individuals who are not like us.
