- Many times, we carry around an overly idealized picture in our minds of the type of working parent we want to be, or we set goals that involve excelling at everything, like having it all. But we don't actually prepare for what we'll choose to sacrifice when competing demands put us in a bind. So we end up disappointing everyone: our kids, our bosses, ourselves. It's better to create strategies that work for the lives we truly lead, embrace who we really are, than to tell ourselves false stories about what we should be doing. If you have a partner, it's crucial to bring them into this part of the process. Start setting realistic expectations with your schedule. Choose how you'll spend your time.
