- [Instructor] So the next thing that I want to do in preparation for creating virtual machine instances is to create a security group. Now in the Amazon cloud, a security group is effectively just a firewall. Now remember, we're going to be creating Windows-based virtual machine instances. And anytime that you create a Windows virtual machine, you have the Windows Firewall that you can use. And that Windows Firewall doesn't go away just because we're working in the Amazon cloud, it still exists. When we create a security group, what we're doing is we're creating a firewall that's going to be bound to the virtual machine, but this firewall exists outside of the virtual machine. So it effectively gives you an extra layer of protection in addition to the Windows Firewall. So with that said, let's go ahead and create a security group.
