- When we as finance people are so close to the details, we can think others need to know the full extent of the details too, but that's usually not the case. Several years ago, I was supporting a business leader in an organization preparing for a deposition, a deposition being the sworn testimony outside of a court of law used to gather information from a witness. Now, in this case, the business leader was going to be deposed and wanted to know the key points from the other witnesses' testimony. He handed me a stack of nearly 100 pages, held together by a single steel binder clip. And he said to me, I need you to summarize this on one page. (laughs) I let out a laugh, thinking he was joking, but received a stone-faced look, and his response was, Is there a problem? There was no problem. And I prepared the one-page summary.
