Balancing visual and verbal deliveries
- It's not always easy to strike a balance between what you show and what you say. But balance is what helps with audience engagement, memory retention, and avoiding cognitive overload. How do we go about doing this? Here, I'll share with you several techniques that I use. First, be audibly silent. While it's good practice to minimize the complexity of slides or handouts, in finance, oftentimes we're working with lots of detail. So rather than put up a dense slide or a handout and explain it, just be quiet. Allow your audience the opportunity to read and internalize the information without the distraction of your voice. This silence gives them the space to focus, process, form questions, thoughts, and takeaways. If there is a document or a slide filled with important financial metrics, I may provide an introduction of what I'm about to cover.
