Building a Pareto chart

- [Instructor] The Pareto rule is a common principle, often discussed in business and the world in general, It says that 80% of the issues come from 20% of the problems. The Pareto principle is often called the 80/20 rule. One way we can see the impact of the Pareto effect is by creating a chart called the Pareto chart, where we rank the totals of our categories in this example, from largest to smallest. Conversely we have another y-axis on the visual that calculates the cumulative total as a percentage that adds up to 100% after the last rank item. To calculate numbers behind this chart though, we need to use a few DAX tricks to get there. In Power BI desktop, let's use data for the US state populations from the 2020 US census. We'll first create a DAX measure for these populations using the Calculate and Sum functions on the existing population field that will then use in many other calculations to create our Pareto…
