The Model Context Protocol (MCP) allows developers to add agent behavior to LLMs by providing a universal protocol providing context to language models so they can interface with data and applications in a consistent way. MCP servers expose resources (data), tools (actions), and prompts (instructions) for the LLM and the user to use in performing more complex operations. In this course you’ll explore how the MCP works in Claude Desktop to extend its functionality, and you’ll build your own MCP servers using Python and TypeScript to give LLMs new capabilities to do things on the computer, connect with external APIs, and perform advanced multi-step actions.

    It's a bit offputting to hear "this technology's only 6 months old!" at the beginning of a course that hasn't been updated for nearly 18 months. Sure enough, the content is out of date - the websites referred to have changed substantially - the up-to-date mcp library (1.19.1) for the python example does not work and throws a string formatting error, unless you change the reference to 1.4.1 - however, using the server in Claude Desktop throws the same error - the typescript example assumes too much prior knowledge and doesn't work at all As well as this, the assertion that you don't need to be a programmer in these two languages to understand what is happening is nonsense. Other than being woefully out of date, this is a helpful introduction to an interesting subject.
