Predicting, not estimating
- A waterfall project manager focuses on the iron triangle. Scope, schedule, budget. But as project after project shows, that doesn't work. It leads to all nighters and frayed nerves. As the saying goes, you can have two of the three, but you can't have all three. This is because complex products are not predictable. You aren't making widgets. There are risks related to the technology, related to the product and related to the people. Sometimes work takes longer than expected. Sometimes customers reject a feature that the team thought would be valuable. All of these ups and downs mean that you and the team need to stop predicting and start learning about what works by trying it out. Agile project managers don't try to predict the future and then push the team to make that prediction come true. That's a mistake, while acting as if the future is predictable creates a feeling of security. It's a false sense of security.…
