Who to connect with when marketing on LinkedIn

They say that you are the company that you keep, and your LinkedIn network is no exception. To successfully market on LinkedIn, you need to surround yourself with the people that can help you grow. Be mindful when expanding your network. Not only is there a 30,000 connection limit, but the quality of your connections often matters more than the quantity. Each connection should add value to your professional journey. So who should you connect with on LinkedIn? Here are two questions to ask before accepting a connection request. Is this somebody who could help me learn and grow in my career? And will this connection contribute to a high quality network? Here are some examples of connection requests that you may want to accept on LinkedIn. First, somebody that you met in person at an event, even if they might not be a prospect, connecting with people in your industry can help you to stay on top of all the latest developments, and could lead to referrals in the future. Next, a person who mentions a mutual acquaintance that you admire. These connections are great because they already know, like, and trust somebody that you know. If somebody mentions your work, whether it's an article you've written or a talk that you've given, they're likely to support you and your work in the future and generally make really great connections. And lastly, if they request more information about your services, those requests are important to accept so that you can continue the conversation on or off of LinkedIn. Now, who should you send a connection request to on LinkedIn? Start with current and past colleagues, then consider LinkedIn group members, and event attendees. Also, connect with clients and prospects to build trust. Lastly, reach out to industry leaders you admire. Here's a formula for connection request messages. Start with a personalized greeting, plus why you want to connect, and then end with a polite sign-off. And here's what that might look like in practice.
