From the course: Learning MicroStation CONNECT Edition for General Users

Using the dataset

- [Instructor] Welcome everyone. Let's now discuss installing and configuring the course dataset for use with this class, Learning MicroStation CONNECT Edition for General Users. All the exercises contained within this course have been built to be used with the MicroStation CONNECT Edition and are designed to use a custom WorkSpace/Work Set combination. The MicroStation CONNECT Edition course ware relies upon a specific training workspace entitled BentleyCONNECTTraining. This workspace provides a location for drawings, CAD standards files, and other configuration items that are specific and sometimes unique to the various Bentley training offerings. When the MicroStation CONNECT Edition is started and the BentleyCONNECTTraining workspace is selected, the datasets or work sets will automatically appear in the work set list. Each dataset or work set resides in its own folder. To create the training dataset, first download the zip file. If we look at the zip file, you'll see a PDF which is the handout for the course, a step-by-step guide of what's discussed in the videos. Place the PDF wherever it's convenient for you to locate. Then unzip the training dataset to the root of the C drive. Extract the contents of the zip file, providing a destination location of C colon backslash This will let the zip file take care of creating the BentleyCONNECTTraining folder. The BentleyCONNECTTraining workspace is now unzipped. The workspace still will need to be created after the course dataset has been unzipped to the root of the C drive. Even though the BentleyCONNECTTraining folder is created and exists, We need to tell MicroStation where it can find that BentleyCONNECTTraining folder. Any required directory structure is included in the zip file and will be created for that particular work set. It's important to note that the workspace need only be created one time. For subsequent training classes, unzip the data set to the C drive, merging the contents of the new dataset with that of any existing datasets. If the folder location containing the Bentley training data sets has been changed, the path would also need to be modified to match. In addition to the work sets folder, each work set contains two additional files. These files are crucial to the operation of the MicroStation connect edition and must be retained. The first one is a CFG file, a work set configuration file or CFG file contains any required configuration information that's specific to the individual work set. You'll see a second file called a DGN Ws file. This file is a DGN work set filed DGN Ws and it's used to store information such as a custom work set property, and it includes the sheet index using explore review the dataset files by navigating to the work sets folder. So let's go ahead and start the MicroStation Connect Edition to create the workspace From the work page, pick create workspace We'll name the workspace BentleyCONNECTTraining It's important to type the workspace name exactly as illustrated using no spaces. This name matches exactly the name of the folder where the dataset is installed In the folder locations pick the browse button next to the root folder in browse for folder, let's pick the route for the C drive C colon backslash and select okay. At this point, we can exit and restart the MicroStation Connect Edition to finish creating the workspace upon restarting MicroStation, we'll select the workspace as BentleyCONNECTTraining In the list of corresponding work sets, you should see the dataset or work set for your particular course. In our case MS Basics. we can now click browse And from the DGN folder in the work set we can open the required DGN. You've now successfully downloaded and installed the training dataset. You've created the BentleyCONNECTTraining workspace and access the design files from the training data set. As you work through the learning MicroStation Connect Edition for general users course you'll note that it's made up of 12 modules and each module contains a series of videos each video corresponding to a particular exercise. As you watch the videos, you'll note that the video references the name of a MicroStation DGN file. A DGN file is the native Bentley MicroStation file format. You'll also note while the video verbally calls out the name of the file, it's also listed visually on the screen and each exercise can also be followed in a step-by-step course guide. Now let's get started.
