- Picture the following conversation between Janice, a lean practitioner, Boyd, an EHS, environmental health and safety manager, and Alice, the COO, chief operating officer of the company they work for. The three are part of a larger team meeting to develop their strategy for the coming year. Alice, the COO, has already stated one very clear goal, to achieve additional cost reductions and improve the company's profitability to increase shareholder value. Not too different from many organizations, right? After all, profits are needed to keep the company running and fuel future growth. As people went around the room pitching their ideas on cost cutting, the conversation turned to Boyd, the EHS manager. While everyone agreed that for safety no cost cutting was expected, there were concerns about budgets related to ensuring compliance of environmental requirements.
