- In many business analysis contexts, the term requirements is used. In the past, requirements were meant to mean what is required by a system. These would be written up and given to software engineers. Today, the ways teams collaborate on requirements is changing. In today's complex business and technology environment, nothing is truly required in an absolute sense. Requirements are more like hypotheses and assumptions of what we think will add value. We discover, analyze, and validate requirements. And then once a solution is implemented, we monitor the results to see if we need to continue to improve things to get the outcomes we want. The challenge lies in balancing thorough requirements work with the need for agility. Overly detailed, upfront requirements risk missing market opportunities.
