Differences between RPA and other tools
- I'm often asked, isn't RPA just macros on steroids? In a way, yes, but also no. Like macros, RPA emulates human actions. But where macros are tied to a single app, RPA can orchestrate entire workflows across dozens of systems, apply complex logic, and integrate securely with enterprise environments. It's also different from business process management or BPM. BPM is a methodology, a way to redesign processes from the ground up. RPA works on top of existing processes, executing them as a human would. They're not competitors, they're complimentary. If you imagine this spectrum as a ladder of capabilities, it looks something like this. Deterministic, RPA and rules engines, semi-cognitive, intelligent document processing, natural language processing, optical character recognition, generative, large language models, retrieval augmented generation models, domain tuned AI, agentic, multi-agent frameworks AI-to-AI…
