The better way to duplicate a pattern

- In this movie I'll show you a better way to duplicate a pattern and also show you how dynamic effects, such as this outer glow right here, are a little bit too much for repeating tile patterns to handle. So notice that my big rectangle is still selected as indicated not only by these purple corner handles, but by the center point as well. And that's just fine. That will allow me to apply this new pattern as I create it. So anytime you want to leap off from an existing pattern swatch without replacing the original, all you have to do is select it here inside the swatches panel, and then click on a little page icon at the bottom of the panel, and that will force the display of the new swatch dialog box. At which point I'll go ahead and call this guy dualism and click okay. And notice that it's gone ahead and applied the duplicate swatch to the selected rectangle.
