- [Instructor] A printer is really a separate computer, though one with a specific purpose. As such, it has a slate of troubleshooting items for you to check when things don't go as expected. On the printer itself, ensure that it's plugged in and stocked with ink and paper. Check the printer's control panel for any messages or alerts. Many printers feature a print test page command. Use it to confirm that things are operating properly. Next, check the connection. For a printer connected directly to the computer, ensure that the USB cable is attached. For a network computer, is it connected to the network? Further, is the network available? You can't print on a network printer when the computer has other networking issues. In Windows, you can check the printer's queue, the holding area for documents waiting to be printed.
