Maintain integrity with once-only data inputs
- Workbook integrity can mean different things to different folks. But the one thing that I would like to focus on is something that I call once only inputs. If there's an input in your spreadsheet that's going to be used more than once, then let's make sure that it's typed in only once and not buried somewhere in formulas. I'll show you exactly what I mean. What you're looking at here is a lifecycle costing model for the purchase of a new car. Now, this type of asset could be used in both a work and personal setting. Based on the information entered, we can expect the new car to cost eight and a half thousand dollars, plus a total running cost of $49,920. But let's actually have a look here in cell C7. This formula has a number eight in there. What does this mean? There's no note on the cell. So we're kind of having to guess. Having built this spreadsheet myself, I can tell you with confidence that it's the number…
