- These days, filing should be almost extinct, but it isn't quite dead yet. So let's look at filing when it comes to both emails and paper. And in the case of emails, you can find anything you want by searching for it rather than having to laboriously put it into folders and then having to remember later which folder you put it in. In fact, searching is better than filing, because you could search on anything, whereas the filing is only done on one attribute. For example, you might search on customer name, company name, product name, date, or a combination of these, but you can't file something in more than one folder unless you want to make copies of it, which is going to get out of hand when you update one of them. Now, with Gmail, you can effectively file things in multiple folders. For example, you could put an email in a customer folder and a subject folder, because Gmail uses tags, also known as labels, instead of folders.
