Why usability testing?
From the course: Designing for Virtual Reality
Why usability testing?
- Usability is the most important component of designing something new. It suggests exactly what it sounds like, a user's ability to use a tool or technology. And yet too often we wait until after the design is almost complete to gather usability data, but by then, it's very difficult to pivot or change major components of a VR environment. So let's talk about how to gather usability data earlier on in the design process. When you think of usability, you likely think of the gold standard, the System Usability Scale. This is a wonderful empirical tool that allows you to formally test the usability of your system. Typically, this survey is used after participants experience a full VR environment. It asks users questions about ease of use, system complexity, and user burden. This is a great quantitative tool that allows you to define just how usable your technology is. But what about when we haven't built out much of our environment yet, and we don't have a full system to test? At this…
