- I got a question for you. What did Bill Gates do to make all of his money? Now, a lot of people will say, well, he started Microsoft. Yeah, he did start Microsoft. But here's the bigger question. What did Microsoft do to start making so much money? The answer is simple. Bill Gates invented the concept of software licensing. Before Bill Gates came around, if you bought a computer you could just grab any software you wanted. Software in and of itself had no value and people copied stuff like crazy and that was the common thing to do. If you bought a big mainframe computer it came with the software and you just used the software. It wasn't until Bill Gates came along and posted a very famous ad in a very famous magazine saying, "If you use my stuff you have to give me money." Software was free.
