- [Instructor] Hardening is the process of applying secure configurations to reduce the attack surface of a system or a network, and lock down different types of hardware, communication systems, software, and that includes operating systems, web servers, application servers, and the actual applications themselves. Configuration management is a process and discipline that is used to ensure that the only changes made to a systems are those that have been authorized and validated by the IT staff, and by the different individuals within the organization. It is both a decision-making process and a set of control processes, as well. If you look closely at this concept, the basic configuration management process will include components like identification, baselines, updates, and patches.
