- If you think accountants are the rule following guardians of the status quo, think again. In the early 80s as novel PCs were coming to market, those number crunchers were really rebel early adopters. The computer engineers working on mini and mainframe computers were so focused on their jobs running computational programs for people in other departments that they didn't think much about how this new breed of computing could support the work of others. It wasn't unusual for someone in an accounting department to buy a PC and spreadsheet software and just figure out how using these tools could help them in their jobs. Over time, many of these accountants turned IT professionals became the experts, taking on new jobs, deploying the technology throughout their organizations.
