The art of asking questions
- Early in your career, it's very natural to have a lot of questions. That's great. You are meant to be questioning things as an engineer. That being said, there's a fine line between being resourceful and asking good questions, whereas someone who's very frequently pinging their team members with questions. Today, I'm going to give you a handy framework to ask great questions, and how to use AI to sharpen them before you ping a teammate. First, a simple checklist I use every day. Documents, AI, human. Step one, check the README, the design document, the issue thread. One minute of skimming often answers the question outright. Step two, use AI as your rubber duck to clarify and narrow your problem. Step three, if you're still blocked, ask a human, arriving with a concise, well-formed question. When you do ask, package it with just the right components.
