Layer 2 functions: MAC
(bright music) - [Instructor] If the RLC layer is the traffic controller of layer two, the MAC layer is its orchestrator. It manages resources, ensuring reliability, and optimizing every transmission. It has different key functionalities, including the context management where it stores the UE context. It also take care of the hybrid automatic repeat request management where it combines error correction via retransmission with forward error correction. If a UE reports a known acknowledged message, then the MAC triggers retransmission without waiting for the higher layers. That's what MAC layer does. It also takes care of the preambles during the RACH procedure. It also manages the common control channels in uplink and downlink. It also manages the resources that is being allocated for the control channel as well as for the shared channel. It also split the uplink transport blocks into the RLC PDUs. Now, MAC has certain other key responsibilities, which includes dynamic resource…
