Create an A/B test using the audience variable in Campaign Manager

Create an A/B test using the audience variable to test two ad sets with different target audiences. This A/B test only applies to Classic ad sets.

To maximize result reliability, an A/B test and a Brand Lift test can't run simultaneously in the same account.

Important to know

• Due to new European law, A/B Testing will temporarily restrict targeting members in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland. Please note that for any test targeting these regions between October 8, 2023, and February 5, 2024, we retroactively re-processed the test results and filtered out actions from members in the EEA and Switzerland who have chosen not to connect their Marketing Solutions services to their core LinkedIn experience. Learn more.
• From late August 2024, the messaging objective is no longer available in Campaign Manager. See the Messaging objective is no longer available article for more information.

To create an A/B test using the audience variable:

  1. Go to your ad account in Campaign Manager.

  2. Click Test on the left side of the Campaign Manager page. 

    1. Click Create test on the upper-right side of the Campaign Manager page and select A/B test from the dropdown.
      Note: If you have not yet created an A/B test or a Brand Lift test, click the Create test button in the middle of the page.
    2. On the A/B test page, complete the A/B testVariantAd setAd, and Review & Launch sections to create a new A/B test.
  3. To complete the A/B test section: 

    1. Enter a descriptive test name in the A/B test name field.
    2. In the Variable section, select Audience
    3. Select the required budget type from the Test budget dropdown and enter the budget amount.
    4. In the Ad sets in this A/B test section, enter descriptive names for the two ad sets. The A/B test automatically creates the two ad sets that are required to test the two versions of your ad variable.
    5. In the Schedule section, enter the Start date and End date for the A/B test. When the A/B test ends, both ad sets pause. An A/B test needs to run for a minimum of 2 weeks and a maximum of 90 days.
      1. Note: A/B tests cannot be activated the same day they are created.
    6. Click Next to complete and move to the Variant section of the A/B test.
  4. To complete the Variant section:

    1. Click Set Up Audience for Audience A and define your target audience by selecting from the available options.
    2. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for Audience B with a difference target audience.
      1. Note: Some members might appear in both the test and control groups, but our data and platform checks have shown that the effect is generally insignificant.
    3. Optional: You can enable or disable Audience Expansion.
    4. Click Next to complete and move to the Ad set section of the A/B test.
  5. To complete the Ad set section:

    1. In the Objective section, select the objective for your A/B test. Depending on the chosen objective, Campaign Manager populates the Test metric dropdown with the applicable test metrics. 
    2. In the Test metric dropdown, select your preferred test metric.
    3. In the Ad format section, select your ad format. Only one ad format is required.
    4. In the Placements section, confirm your required placement.
      1. Optional: If enabled, click the Show Brand Safety options to exclude categories or add a publisher list.
    5. In the Budget & Schedule section, review the names and budget of the two ad sets that you want to run in the A/B test.
    6. In the Bidding section, select the Optimization goal and Bidding strategy.
      1. Note: To identify the winning ad set when using dynamic ads (follower, spotlight, and jobs ads) or text ads, you must either set a higher manual bid than the minimum recommended or select a different A/B test metric than your ad set’s optimization goal. For example, if you selected Cost-Per-1,000 impressions (CPM) as the A/B test metric, you should not select the same metric as the optimization goal. This recommendation is to ensure you don't create an inaccurate test. For dynamic ads and text ads, only the manual bidding strategy is available.
    7. Optional: In Conversion tracking, select or create the required conversion.
    8. Click Next and Save to complete and move to the Ad section of the A/B test.
  6. To complete the Ad section:

    1. Click Create new ad(s) to create new ad formats or click Browse existing content to select ad formats from the content library.
    2. Click Next to complete and move to the Review & Launch section of the A/B test.
  7. To complete the Review & Launch section:

    1. Review the A/B test summary on the right side of the page.
    2. Review and resolve any red warnings as indicated in the error message. Orange warnings don't require resolution, but you should review them before launching the A/B test.
    3. Click Launch A/B Test on the bottom left of the Review & Launch section or from the Payment method section on the upper-right corner of page.
    4. Optional: Click Save and Exit to save the A/B test as a draft.

Results:

  • A confirmation dialog opens confirming your A/B test has launched. The A/B test begins once it hits the start date. 
  • Ads that were previously approved will start serving immediately and new ads are served once approved.
  • Click Go to Testing to view your A/B test on the Test page.
