“Being a board member is a commitment. Don’t rush it. Make sure you have the time, and are passionate about the company. On the flip side, I love being on boards because it helps me be a better operator. 10 years ago this month I left Apple to become employee #1 at ExecThread — which LinkedIn reminded me of via an unprompted #Anniversary post this week. Some people thought I was crazy for doing so. At the time they asked me why would I leave the most successful company on the planet to take a flyer on an unproven NewCo? Others asked me why would I leave all that “money on the table” (i.e., unvested options, RSU’s, W2, etc.) — as well as all of the other fringe benefits that come with working for a company like Apple — to work for much less income, and to work much harder, and with a far greater #risk factor with ExecThread? My answer was simple. That’s what founders do. That’s what gets founders out of bed in the morning. Founders don’t care about “job security”. Founders don’t focus on “career management”, or on promotions, or on “working their way up the corporate ladder”. Founders don’t pursue #entrepreneurship as a “#career path”. They pursue it as a calling. Founders are motivated by accomplishing something that’s never been done before — regardless of the sacrifices it requires, and in spite of the #opportunity costs. For me, that challenge was how to ‘uncover’ the “hidden #job market”, and how to do so at scale. And along the way it evolved into how to do so profitably, year-after-year-after year. Fast-forward 10 years, I can confidently say that I made the right decision, in-spite of the immense challenges confronted over such time — and in spite of many sleepless nights and numerous nail-biting experiences that are associated with starting a company from scratch, and figuring out along the way how to still be firmly standing 10 years later. How many #founders can say the same thing 10 years after they stated a company? Not many. Likely less than 1% of 1%. So if you “have a great idea”, but have not yet pursued it in-earnest, I have one quick piece of #advice for you, which is a slogan that a small company named Nike once made famous… #JustDoIt.
