A friend asked me to look at a problem with their WordPress site. The site was developed a number of years ago, and has had a couple of different people work on it but they’re no longer aroud to ask. I have used WP a bit but am not an expert. It is a band website and has a ‘meet the band’ page. The page says that it is using the ‘Team Template’ but I can’t see this in the Templates section of WordPress.
If I scroll down the edit page, there is a team management section. This lists all the band members. There are options to delete and add new, however clicking these appear to have no effect.
I am wondering if this template is part of a plugin that has stopped working for some reason? The plugins section is showing the following notifications:

Elementor appears to be on v3.20.4 and 3.21.0 is available. However there is a warning that the new version may have breaking changes, so I’m a little wary of doing that update, as I have no experience with Elementor, and I have no idea if the problem is related to this plugin or not. There is also a Pro version of this plugin. We don’t know if the pro version may have been used in the past to create this page.
If anyone can shed any light on this we’d be very grateful.
Without knowing the project and the plugins and themes used, it is difficult to answer this question. But I’ll give it a try. You mention that Elementor is used. If the team template was created using it, you should be able to find it under Templates in the menu on the left. If you have any questions about Elementor, I would recommend their support forum: https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/elementor/ – since the Pro version is also used, my recommendation would be to contact their support: https://elementor.com/support/
If, contrary to expectations, it does not come via Elementor, the next assumption would be that it is a template in the theme. Unfortunately, this is where my crystal ball stops displaying other things.
There appears to be a number of themes installed. The active theme appears to be ‘Brooklyn Child’. Is this ‘Team Template’ likely to be part of that? I have had a click around in the themes section but can’t see anything related to page templates in there.
When I click on Templates it displays ‘No Templates Found’ in the list of saved templates. However it also shows All(1) | Published (1). When I click on that it shows a template called ‘Default Kit’. This appears to be something created by the last person to look at the site fairly recently. I have assumed that was something they were experimenting with and not relevant, but I could be wrong?
We do not have the Pro version of Elementor. We might be willing to get the Pro version if necessary, but it would be nice to know if this is definitely needed before we pay out for that. We wondered if perhaps this Team Template is something that was perhaps available for free in an earlier version of Elementor, or if perhaps the site was initially built with the Pro version or something like that?
I can’t answer your question about the child theme. Child themes are created individually, so nobody here can know what this theme contains. Only the person who created the theme or someone who has access to its source code – i.e. you or someone you authorise to check it – knows that. As far as I know, Elementor does not provide any templates. Whatever you are looking for, if it is not in the Elementor templates, will probably be in the child theme.
If the active theme is Brooklyn Child, its parent theme is likely Brooklyn, a commercial theme we’re unable to support here. I’m very skeptical that Brooklyn theme has a “Team” template, though it’s possible.
To complicate matters, a template’s “name” is not necessarily similar to its file name. To get to the right template file, I recommend installing and activating the Template Debugger plugin. When you navigate to the team page, the related template will be displayed in the admin bar. Click the template name and you should be taken to the theme editor with the specific template shown in the editor.
It’s inadvisable to edit a file of an active theme in the theme editor. While the editor tries to prevent errors, it’s not foolproof. If an error is introduced it could crash the entire site, preventing access to the editor. Such an error will have to be corrected via FTP. To avoid this, activate a different theme, then edit the file while its theme is inactive. If you introduce an error now, you will be unable to reactivate the theme, but the editor will remain accessible so you can correct the error.
It’s not clear what you’re actually trying to accomplish. There’s a chance it’s not something within the template itself. However, the template’s source code could likely point to where the data you want to correct is coming from, so it’s a reasonable starting point. Unfortunately, how it points to a data source might require some understanding of PHP and how WP works in general. Deciphering what’s going on could be a challenge. All the same, it’s worth a look, it might not be as obscure as I’m fearing.
