• Hello,

Since my website was updated to WordPress 6.8, I’m having a major issue navigating blocks. First, I go to a page or blog post to edit it. Second, I go to a specific block and press enter to go into its edit box. Finally, when I press escape, it doesn’t go to the navigation mode.

Recently before WordPress 6.8, I was able to press the escape key, bringing me to the navigation mode where I use the arrow keys to move around blocks and easily edit them. I’m using NVDA with Firefox.

Has anybody else ran into this issue? If you have any questions, please let me know.

    Thank you.

  • Yes, I’ve been facing the same issue when trying to navigate through blocks. The Escape key no longer returns me to Navigation Mode like it used to, which has definitely made editing a bit trickier.

One workaround I found helpful is using the Document Overview shortcut (Alt + O for Windows & Ctrl + Option + O for Mac)

Once you open the overview, you can navigate through the blocks using the arrow keys, press Enter to jump into a block and start editing it, and then press the shortcut again to return to Navigation Mode when you’re done. It’s not quite the same as the old Escape behavior, but it does the job for now.

    Hope this helps!

I can confirm this using NVDA 2024.4.2 and Google Chrome Version 135.0.7049.96 (Official Build) (64-bit)

I also only started seeing this after the update to 6.8

Thank you for the workaround, but I hope this wasn’t a deliverate change and that it might get fixed sooner rather than later.

Thank you @devasheeshkaul and @sallyjoycek! I’ll try to see if one of the workarounds fixes the issues. I’ve been using WordPress for a long time, and I’d hate to switch platforms because of this issue. I hope that there will be a fix soon.

    Here’s what I’m using:

    • Screen-Reader: NVDA Version 2024.4.2
    • Browser(s): Firefox Version 137.0.2 (64-bit) and Google Chrome Version 135.0.7049.96 (Official Build) (64-bit)

If you have any questions, please let me know.

    Thank you.

    Hello @devasheeshkaul,

What screen-reader are you using? I tried the workaround by pressing Alt+O with NVDA when I was in a block, but it doesn’t seem to work.

Edit: The workaround worked. I had to press Alt+Shift+O to get it to work.

    Thank you.

    Hey @armandovias,

Yeah, the shift was there for the uppercase ‘O’, thus making it ‘Alt + O’ instead of ‘Alt + o’. I should have mentioned that specifically, my bad.

    Glad it worked for you!

    Hello @devasheesh Kaul and all,

    Thank you for the clarification.

Right now, I decided to downgrade to WordPress 6.7.2 until the command for the escape key and to easily navigate the blocks is fixed in a later update.

Update: Apparently, they removed the escape shortcut due to some issues.
