When formatting tabs, it is frequent that designers would want the active tab to include bold text but inactive ones to be set normal. That is not possible with the current tab, as the Typography choice sits outside of the Normal | Hover | Active controls. Therefore, its settings are global across the board and that is not very flexible.
The Typography control needs to move down into the Normal | Hover | Active set. See my graphic.
Hi James — I don’t think this has anything to do with my theme and I am not suggesting that the feature is broken. I believe that it is working as designed…but that the design needs to be improved. The typography setting for tab titles sits apart from the settings that change based on the state of the tab (Normal, Hover, Active). Therefore, we cannot direct that type, say, become bold when it is active. It is all one thing or another thing, independent of tab state.
I would like to see that changed. I would like to see Typography join the other settings that can change based on tab state.
First of all, I would be interested to know which tabs you are talking about. Do you mean the ones in the backend on some pages there, or do you mean something in the frontend of your website? Please feel free to show an example via screenshot: https://wordpress.org/support/forum-user-guide/block-editor/#adding-screenshots
Hmm, my screenshot apparently did not get published. I am drilling down in the Tab widget: to Style and then to the Title section. It is there that one might want to establish that the active tab would see the title become bold, while the inactive tab would stay normal. Or perhaps upon hover, one might want the title to grow in size just a bit.
These are perfectly legitimate design choices…but they are impossible, because Typography is not one of the controls that can be set as part of the Normal/Hover/Active set of conditions. I will try again to drop in a screenshot:
