Been working with WordPress & Multisite for a minute or two but can’t recall if I’ve ever tried to configure multisite on a subdomain.

    Scenario:
    – mainsite.com (Not WordPress)
    – community.mainsite.com (WordPress Multisite)
I’ve configured multisite, have access to the network admin, and can create a subsite.

    Subsite:
    – demo.community.mainsite.com

In Plesk for subsites I have to:
    – Make sure the wildcard (*) exists in GoDaddy.
    – Reissue the certificate and check to secure the wildcard.
    – This forces me to add a TXT record to GoDaddy.
    – Create a new Domain Alias. So on a normal multisite I’d add the domain alias as demo.mainsite.com. If I was mapping it to a custom domain then I’d add that domain.

When attempting to visit the subsite in this scenario the site can’t be reached. I’m sure it’s DNS but can’t figure out what’s tripping this up.

    Any responses appreciated.

Your question has less to do with WordPress and more with the technology required for configuring domains and hosting.

I recommend first checking whether the subpage’s DNS is correctly configured. Simply ping or use this tool here: https://mxtoolbox.com/NetworkTools.aspx – this should return your hosting IP address.

Contact Godaddy Support to determine what might be incorrectly configured in the domain’s DNS.

Just learned that wildcard certs don’t go multi-level. So if I want to get this scenario to work I’ll have to purchase a multi-domain wildcard cert.
