About .in domains

This page explains special requirements for domains with the .in extension.

Who can register .in domains?

Anyone (Individuals and companies) located anywhere can register .in and all related ccSLDs (co.in, firm.in, gen.in, ind.in, net.in, and org.in) domain names.

Privacy protection for .in Domains

.in domains, as well as all related ccSLDs, don’t support privacy protection. All contact information must be public.

Domain verification for .in domains

.in domain registration is regulated by the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI). To verify domain ownership, NIXI requires registrants to provide valid proof of identity, such as a government-issued ID or driver’s license.

If you register a .in domain through WordPress.com, you may be asked to submit your proof of identity. While the verification is in progress, NIXI will temporarily suspend the domain.

Renewal restrictions for .in domains

If we cannot auto-renew the domain name and you do not manually renew it before it reaches expiration, it must be redeemed. There might be a fee for redemption. See Renewing a Domain in the Redemption Period for instructions on the redemption.

Transfers of .in domains

Transferring to another registrar

You must initiate the transfer with the gaining registrar, who will require the registrant to provide an authorization code for the transfer. You need to allow 5-7 days for the transfer to complete.

Incoming transfers

You can transfer your .in domains to WordPress.com. Please follow the steps in the Incoming Domain Transfer guide.
